More than 100 members of churches and student groups, among other organizations, came together over the weekend before school started to manually install numerous chain link fence slats, enhancing the privacy of the playground at Eugene Field Elementary.

With all hands on deck, it only took three hours to weave the 1,500 or so vinyl pieces on Saturday, Aug. 22. The volunteer effort was initially organized by R-I maintenance supervisor Colt Sievers, who noted that his department was “swamped” this summer with larger-scale projects across the district, and he did not have the manpower prior to the re-opening of campus.

“I was out of time and that project had to be done so the best outside the box idea I had was to turn this into a community project,” explained Sievers, adding: “It worked.”

Sievers first approached his congregation at The Bluff Church, then the call to action spread via social media and other churches vowed to join including: Northpoint Nazarene, Grace Christian Fellowship and the First Baptist Youth Group. Sievers further reached out to his brother David, coach over Mules Football, who rounded together some student-athletes. PBHS Student Council members also joined in, along with the JROTC. Firefighters off the clock with the Poplar Bluff Fire Department additionally participated.

“It was such a hectic time with starting school, therefore it was such an amazing gift for our staff that so many individuals and organizations stepped up to ensure that our playground is safe and ready for students to return on Monday,” stated Jennifer Taylor, Eugene Field principal. “Our vision at Eugene Field has always been to provide the safest playground environment, allowing our teachers to be focused directly on our students without distractions outside of the fence. It is such a blessing to have all of this support from the community.”
